Bowled Over by VIBE
Lion Tom writes – On Saturday 6th April, Lion Mary and I supported VIBE – Visually Impaired Bowls, England at the City and County of Bristol Indoors Bowling Club, South Liberty Lane, in Bristol.
Ten visually impaired teams came from London, Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Forest of Dean and Bristol to compete for The Joan Howard Indoor National Triples Championship Cup. This event was started 2002. We were given instruction in “Calling” for the sight-impaired competitors. This instruction was given by Clive and Bernadette Robinson from VIBE and they demonstrated how the numerical numbers on the clock face with distance instruction given by the caller, assisted the competitor in bowling towards the jack. We found this very interesting and were glad we were not called upon to assist, because the competition was fierce and competitive and on the day, thankfully, they had enough callers. (Beginners nerves). However, we are now ready to assist at other competitions if Lions are called upon to support such an event in the future.
This was such a great event and Bristol Brunel and Bradley Stoke Lions are very glad to help such a great organisation and event.
By the way, as a result of the friendship fostered by Lion Robin from Bradley Stoke with Clive and Bernadette, they have both decided to become Lions and are being ‘badged up’ on Monday at Worle Lions. Well done, we wish them both good luck in the future – what a partnership! We look forward to working with them both again.
